God Will Do the Rest

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of her canonization as a saint in Heaven, we remember the words of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton: “Do what you can, and God will do the rest.”

God will indeed do the rest when we allow Him the space to work. We can only do what we can do.  If we are operating in accord with His will, to the best of our ability, we don’t have to be perfect or have all the answers. We just do what we can, and He will quite literally do the rest.

This takes faith and a perseverance of heart. It takes a trust in God that He is good and wants only good for us. We know this prudently.  But it is only fully realized in its practice.

This quote, which was a focus of our parish celebrations last year as we honored the 40 years our parish has existed, came to me again in prayer one day as I (Lori) wrestled with a project that I want to present in its full perfection. But, truthfully, nothing created by little ol’ mortal me is going to be perfect. So as I prayed for the understanding of how to put this project together, God reminded me of the words of our parish’s patron saint. He reminded me that all I have to do is what I can, and He will take care of everything else.
